Many people go to bed with wet hair without knowing how harmful that is. This habit can cause many health issues much more serious than cold or pneumonia.
If we go to bed with wet hair the moisture stays longer and it can inflame the scalp which can cause itching sensation as well as damage to the mane. Keeping a towel on the head for too long has the same effects as sleeping with wet hair.
Health issues caused by sleeping with wet hair
Hair breakage
The hair is more prone to breakage when it is wet, so sleeping with wet hair can make your hair break easily.
Sticky hair
The hair can become difficult to be entangled particularly for people with long hair.
Headache
Like we said the moisture from the wet hair retains during the night. While we sleep our body temperature rises, so the big difference in temperature causes headaches.
Itchy skin
The moisture that forms on the scalp causes various types of itching.
Infections
Sleeping with wet hair will make your pillow wet too and it will turn it into the ideal place for bacteria to breed in and cause infections.
Muscle pain
The temperature change because of sleeping with wet hair can also cause facial paralysis, severe cramps or muscle pain. Even though it is rare there have even been cases of whole body paralysis and death due to sleeping with wet hair.
Dandruff
The function of the sebaceous glands on the scalp becomes interrupted because of the moisture. This is why they either produce more or less oil which eventually will disrupt the pH balance of your scalp and trigger dandruff or excessively oily scalp.
So, in order to protect your health never sleep with wet hair and always wash your hair during the day.
