Side effects of using turmeric
Even though turmeric is very beneficial for the health, there are some components in it that can have negative effects if combined with certain medication. For example, turmeric has anti-thrombotic properties that reduce blood clots which is why it should not be consumed with blood thinning medications. These medications include clopidogrel, warfarin and aspirin. Takin them with turmeric can cause serious harm because the risk of bleeding will increase significantly.
Other medications that should not be mixed with turmeric are those that reduce stomach acid because turmeric increases the production of stomach acid which can lead to nausea, bloating and can even cause damage to the esophagus. So, avoid taking turmeric if you are taking these medications: Omeprazole, Ranitidine (Zantak), Cimetidine (Tagamet), Famotidine (Pepcid).
Some people also have allergic reaction when taking turmeric and experience anaphylaxis, shortness of breath, hives/rashes and other symptoms.
Turmeric should also never be mixed with diabetes medication because it strengthens the effects of the meds thus increasing the risk of low blood sugar which can be very dangerous. Side effects of takin turmeric and diabetes medications include delirium, anxiety, tremor, reduced cognitive function and blurred vision.
In case you are on any of the above mentioned medications always avoid taking turmeric to prevent serious health complications. There are always other natural supplements that you can use as a substitute for turmeric without any side-effects.
